As a Paediatric physiotherapist with over 25 years’ experience, I have observed many significant advances in paediatric physiotherapy techniques and technologies.
New treatment options and evidence-based practices form the building blocks of your approach, but nothing can replace the skills learnt from many years of hands-on practice.
I have had the pleasure of watching, learning and developing techniques with many children and we have become an integral part of each other’s lives.
As a Paediatric physiotherapist it is your professional obligation to continue your training and development, to ensure you are providing current evidenced based interventions. Dynamic movement intervention is a revolutionary approach to working with children and young people with neurological conditions. It first came onto my radar about 12 months ago and my first impressions were ‘no way can we dangle children upside down’. However, we started to see the impact it was having on children’s lives and decided to make the plunge and start our own DMI journey.
Alice, Bayla and I, have now all completed introductory level one DMI training. We have started to implement the exercises into our practice, and we are seeing fantastic results. A bonus is that the children seem to really enjoy it.
The approach pushes boundaries and takes us out of our comfort zone sometimes. If I’m honest the programmes are physically demanding on not only the children but the therapists carrying them out.
The exercises are dynamic and challenging, but the impact is in my opinion groundbreaking.
We are excited to continue our DMI journey and build on our expertise. Our next steps are to complete the next level of training to see where this journey can take us and the special young people, we have the pleasure of supporting.
